Nobody's Favorite: Revisiting The 1980s Alfa Romeo Spider
Presented in 1966 and produced until 1993, the classic Spider enjoyed the longest production run in Alfa Romeo's history, during which the model changed remarkably little. But if you ask people about their favourite Alfa Spider, hardly anyone will mention the 1980s models.
Yet, due to these Spiders being those that were current when I was little, or probably due to the widespread 1980s influences that pervade pop culture lately, I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to these less-regarded Spiders.
The Spider "Aerodinamica" was presented in March 1983 at the Geneva Motor Show, but the idea behind the new Spider's more aggressive appearance originated from a prototype presented by Pininfarina...

"X" Factor: The Curious Story Of How The X1/9 Got Its Name
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
As you will probably know, the X1/9 moniker originated as the car's project code. Still, if you've ever wondered how that came to be and why, here's the story. Aiming to bring some order into the growing number of models and designs, Fiat's legendary technical director Dante Giacosa established in 1946 a simple three-digit numbering system, the first of which was to be 1 for passenger cars, 2 f...

With a production run spanning almost two decades, during which nearly 200.000 units were made, the 124 Spider is a beloved Fiat classic that enjoys a strong following on both sides of the Atlantic. Yet few people know that the timeless lines of this most Italian of automobiles were actually penned by an American for a Corvette. Underrated: Why I Love Nobody's Favorite Lancia
Просмотров 24 тыс.Год назад
Work on the Gamma began shortly after Fiat's takeover of an ailing Lancia in late 1969. The firm needed new models quickly, and precedence was given to the smaller Beta, which came out in 1972 and was intended as Lancia's volume seller for the Seventies. #lancia #classiccars #history Launched in 1976, the Gamma was to be the brand's new flagship, replacing the Flavia 2000 sedan and coupè, whose...
Iso Rivolta: The Coolest Cars You've Never Heard Of
Просмотров 11 тыс.Год назад
Several boutique European manufacturers have exploited the "American muscle in a coachbuilt body" formula over time, with varying degrees of success. But if there's been a company that, perhaps above all others, truly mastered the art of blending new-world horsepower with old-world sophistication, that's Iso Rivolta. Active between 1962 and 1974, Iso's luxurious GTs powered by American V8s were...

Cylinder deactivation technology is quite common in modern cars, especially those equipped with larger engines. But what if I told you that Alfa Romeo was a pioneer in this field and that over four decades ago, you could have bought an Alfetta that seamlessly switched on and off half its cylinders according to driving conditions? The Alfetta's classic 1962cc inline-four twin-cam became the plat...

I have a 74 spica and want to convert to side webbers but are the newer webbers better than the old ones they used on these cars? My spica is very temperamental and I don't know anybody at all who will work on them and I live in a big city. I mean one year it dies at idle but starts great, the next year it is very hard to even start, but once it does, it runs great with no stalling. I just want the consistency of a car that starts easy, and runs until you shut it off. But when I called even the best company in Seattle to ask if they could do the switch? the guy didn't know and said he would have to ask somebody else. I wish I could find a little old man who knew these cars in and out. But as the years go by, it gets more and more hard to find anybody even willing to work on them

@@Matteo_Licata dark green. Never looked at the paint name. Th first one was a silver grey 1.3s from late 80's ( maybe I still have some car papers). Then I bought a GTV6 to it. Then I had a dark blue 33. Do not know the year but bought it for Guilders or Euro. Some Opel Kadetts D in between. I bought an other GTV6. Then a Bordeaux red 33 deluxe with a fabric original green type name on it. It had a very nice interior. Went to Italy with it. Then an other GTV6 that I have to restore. Then the green 33 for €600. Cilinders heads have I let redone. In used condition but driveable. Stands still for 5 years already. So I have a 33, GTV6, Subaru Legacy 3.0r Spec B, Hyundai van, Maserati 4.24 and an Opel Kadett from 1940. And many parts for the GTV6. I keep the 33 for my son. The Subaru has the same amount of HP as the 4.24 but it is much more practical/usefull. I would like to have a Khamsin. Looks like the GTV6. I am busy now converting a St able into a workshop / garage for the cars. Is a lot of work. I think my GTV6 only was on the road for about 15 years. It is inside for 9 plus 15 years.

As an Australian the Fiat 124 was just like a flying box. The front looks like a box. The rear looks like a box. and the cabin an uninspiring box with a roof. As an Australian we in the 1960,s were spoilt by wonderful Japanese designs and even better motors that the Italians cold ever put out. Fiat was so bad that Italians had to rebell and build cars like Lancia, Alfa, Maserati and Ferrari for the upper classes for their own self esteem as if to say, look we can do much better.

Certainly heard of him in the UK. Not only styling cars also styled Lorries. I believe he had a hand in styling the AEC/Albion/Leyland Ergomatic cab. His most impressive styling was the Scammell "Cheese grater Handyman/Trunker cab. I think he also had a hand updating the G cab fitted to the Leyland Clydesdale/Reiver/Terrier models. As mentioned styled the Leyland National bus and also the Scammell Townsman urban delivery artic. A truly gifted and prolific stylist. Agree with the comment citing the Spitfire as a beautiful car. Owned a Mark3 till 2005 but sold it along with a Mark4 to fund the purchase of a Stag. Another beautiful car. Wish I hadn't got rid of the Spit Mk3 now!!!!!!

The British motoring press didn’t like the 33, because they were obsessed with the Alfasud. It seems the extra weight, but the same engines, even same power levels, took the edge off performance and handling. The Sud’s real secret weapon was the inboard discs. If you’ve ever lifted a brake rotor, you can feel the difference 😂

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata Месяц назад

Yes, I know the 33 isn't held in the same high regard as the Alfasud handling-wise. Yet the Italians at the time couldn't care less and bought 33s by the truckload. The 33's design gave it a classier, more upmarket image, perfectly in tune with the 80s zeitgeist.

By whom? “The Graduate”, “Tequila Sunrise”, “Fletch Is Alive”, “See Nothing, Hear Nothing”, “The Woman in Red”, "The Godfather III" and a bunch of Hollywood dramas, comedies, series where these beauties constantly appear. As a kid, I remember every other issue of Playboy (which I read in secret from my parents) with ads of Spiders and sometimes GTV6 (with a lottery for tickets to Milan). In a certain sense, this beauty is one of the Italian automotive symbols of the 80's. Along with Testarossa, Countach and Quattroporte (bad guys' car)

You should mention the amazing zf engine mounted gearbox. Meaning a more responsive drive than the gtv6 ( I owned 2 GTV6 since 1986.) I'm busy mating a 262 5speed CR getrag gearbox to the 2.5 sedan flywheel/pressure plate with my bellhousing. I swapped the zf for a getrag because the gearshift is better positioned than the 90 zf box. I believe the 90 could have been sport upgraded hugely with widened wheel arches, 3-piece split rims etc and become much more popular in the right hands. Just like the later gtv 24v with those stupid headlight holes. I wish someone here would make a mould off one of the latest alfa and create a sexy integrated bonnet/ f/bumper in carbon fibre for a 24v cabriolet gtv 3L. The way mini did. 4 holes in the bonnet....Yuck!
